Moving home in the Doncaster area - here are a

few of our favourite home moving tips:

  • When looking to buy a property you should always view it more than once before committing to the purchase. Doing this at different times of day will give you more perspective on the condition of the property and any localised noise disruption in the area at different times of day.
  • When choosing an estate agent to market your property, make sure to find out how they intend to advertise it. For example, do they advertise purely online or in the local paper as well? Knowing these things will stop any confusion arising once you have signed a contract with them.
  • We all know that first impressions count! Stand outside your house and pretend you were looking at it for the first time. If at all possible put right anything that looks worn or out of place. Ask yourself – would I want to live in a property like this.

Thinking of moving to Doncaster? Learn more about it's history:

Doncaster is a city in South Yorkshire, England. The town is part of the Metropolitan borough of Doncaster. This small town is a few miles from Sheffield and near the famous Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield. Doncaster is built on the land of a Roman fort, which originated in the 1st century AD along the River Don. Many of Doncaster’s streets bear a name with the suffix “gate”- the word gate is derived from “gata”, an Old Danish term for street.

Doncaster has in ancient times been known for its prosperity. It was famous for its wealthy landowners with lavish estates and mansions such as Cantley Hall, Brodsworth Hall, Hickleton Hall and Wheatley Hall. In the 19th century, large buildings were erected such as the corn exchange and Market Hall. One of the most attractive buildings is St George’s Minster.

Doncaster’s main museum is the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery. It was opened in 1964 as a gallery that explores archaeology, natural history, local history and art. The Doncaster Museum features an exhibit dedicated to the trophies and silverware won at Doncaster Racecourse. There is also an Aircraft museum based at Doncaster Lakeside. The trolleybus museum, with over 60 examples of trolleys, is the largest collection of preserved trolleybuses in Europe. There is also the Doncaster Mansion House that has an art gallery and displays of local history. The Cusworth Hall, an 18th century country house features displays of documents about the history of South Yorkshire.

Doncaster expanded greatly in population after the development of coal mining. However, the coal mines were later closed in the 1970’s causing great economic difficulties. Doncaster reversed this tragedy by developing its service industry.

Doncaster is represented by 3 Mps in the House of Commons. At a European level, Doncaster is part of Humber and Yorkshire constituency. It is also one of the twelve UK boroughs that have a directly elected mayor.
